Direct Trade

The four principles of Direct Trade:

Quality

The only way we can ensure the highest quality green beans is to inspect them personally. We also offer premium pricing for higher quality beans to ensure the farmers have an incentive to produce at highest quality.

We purchase coffees considered to be in the top 15% of all coffees grown around the world. All of the coffees have been cupped by us with a minimum score of 85 points (out of a possible 100 points). We also use the SCAA / CQI grading scale to define categorical defects can effect the final taste of the roasted coffee.

Transparency

Our philosophy is to start with the farmer and provide them with the fairest price for the level of quality they provide. We are committed to paying our farmers a sustainable wage for their hard work, and work with them on determining what is fair and sustainable. We pay, on average, 20% more than the current Fair Trade directed price.

Direct Communication

We are continually in communication with our farmers. We visit the farms. We talk on the phone. We email. We ask about their family and the weather. We talk about the off season work that is happening on the farm. We talk about the harvest. We talk about the cupping scores and defects and how we can help them increase the quality of their product. We build trust through respect. We tell them how much we appreciate them, and let them know how we are supporting them in how we represent them to the public. We show them their names on the packaging. We commit to them, year after year.

Social and Environmental Sustainability

We choose farmers who are committed to business practices that enhance their environment and community. Where needed and when appropriate, we help get them access to programs that assist them in their quest to become more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Where possible, we partner with them in giving back to their communities. Whether its supporting the local school system, local non-profit, or teaching local widows about healthy and hygienic cooking, we are there to support the farmer and the community.
